The Globe Cardiff - End of an era for live music in Roath?
Anyone who spent anytime growing up in the Roath area of cardiff is bound to have happy memories of queueing up outside The Globe cinema on a rainy wednesday night, waiting to get in to see the latest blockbuster of the moment.

The Globe Cardiff

I watched massive films of the time there, including  Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Quadraphenia, Abba - The Movie etc, amongst a great many others.

I also saw the original Star Wars movie there 13 times in total.

It should have been 12 (2 shows per night for 6 days) but the lady in the ticket office was so impressed with my perseverance she offered me a free pass for the thirteenth showing. By which time I was pretty much 'word-for-word' with the script so I never stayed for what would have been the fourteenth.

Over the years The Globe has gone through several manifestations, from cinema, to trendy wine bar, to what it is today which is a stonking live music venue, and one which has quickly established itself firmly as a part of the growing Cardiff Fringe music scene.

So it was with a great deal of personal sadness I received an e-mail from the current management at The Globe, asking its current customers for a little help.

The e-mail reads;

Dear Globe Subscriber;

We are contacting everyone who has given either their postal address, email address, or have signed up to our facebook group in support of The Globe.

As you may already know, the council is likely to revoke our entertainment licence at the end of February until we have soundproofed the building. We have already soundproofed our back wall and built an additional fire lobby at a cost of in excess of eight thousand pounds (This area was addressed first as this is in the direction of the main complainant).

This did not satisfy the complainant, so it has been determined that we will need to spend another twenty five thousand pounds to soundproof the floor and roof.

On a positive note, this should also improve heat insulation, make the venue more comfortable in winter, and reduce our heating costs and carbon footprint in the long run.

We started this venture in the worst possible economic climate. A lot of money has been invested in The Globe, and we believe that the business is financially viable in the long term. However, we simply are unable to come up with the money to do the insulation work on our own.

So this is a quest for help. Even though we have had our teething problems, we would like to point out all the positive benefits that have come so far: ·
We have given employment to 10 bar staff, 2 sound engineers, 3 door persons, and a  lighting technician. ·

We have held approximately 500 events which have helped many artists during these difficult times and also provided them with a platform to perform in Cardiff·

We are sure that the great majority of  the 40,000 people who have come through our doors have left feeling uplifted.

There are approx. 7000 people on our mailing list. Not everyone is in a position to donate money, but if everyone contributed £3.50 we would meet our target, including the cost of this communication.

If you are in a position to help, these are the payment options: ·

If you are passing The Globe (7pm show nights) ask for Alan or Gwyn who will process your kind donation. ·

Cheques or postal orders should be made payable to “A D Jones” and sent to The Globe, 125 Albany Rd, Roath, Cardiff. CF24 3NS

Please remember to enclose your personal details. If you supply an email address we can contact you to acknowledge your donation. ·

We also have a paypal account. (www.paypal.com ) Please make payment to \n This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Your email address will appear automatically, but please mark payment as “STG Campaign”, along with your name, so we can identify you on our list. ·

Gold bullion, priceless works of art or just your grandmother’s pearls should be delivered personally.

With Thanks
